Angelina Jolie’s Many Tattoos

Angelina Jolie, beautiful celebrity, tireless charity worker and mother of six, regularly makes headlines. The latest newsNHLTR_circle_white420 on the actress isn’t about her newest blockbuster, however. Recently, Jolie revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after discovering that she had a gene that predisposed her to breast cancer.

Her brave move is in keeping with her passionate and centered personality. Angelina has always appeared to be a woman who knows what she wants. She is also well known for her many tattoos which each have a very special meaning in her life.

Angelina’s total tattoo count continues to change as she adds more, covers some up and removes others. However, here are some of her most well-known tats:

  • Five vertical columns down her left shoulder blade of a Buddhist Pali incantation written in Khmer script made to look like tiger claw marks
  • An Arabic tattoo on her inner right arm that translates to “Determination”
  • The Roman numerals: V MCMXL, which is 13 May 1940, the day Winston Churchill gave a famous speech
  • A large cross tattoo on her left hip and a Latin phrase that translates to “What nourishes me, destroys me.”
  • Rows of coordinates on her left arm that correspond to where each of her children and husband were born.

Angelina has also had several tattoos removed over the years, many related to previous husbands and boyfriends. Angelina’s penchant for peppering her body with meaningful tattoos doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and perhaps she’ll add a new tattoo soon to symbolize the latest challenges she has overcome with her trademark style and flair.

Popular Tattoos For Women

This blog post is for the ladies. Women are feeling more and more comfortable going under the needle to add a little colorful ink beneath their skin. Unlike men, who gravitate towards large, aggressive tattoos such as tribal bands, lions, skulls, eagles and the like – women tend to request smaller, brighter and more positive tattoos that highlight the playful aspects of their personality.

Based on our research and observation, here are some of the most common tattoo designs chosen by women:

Flowers

Lotus, sunflowers, roses and just about every other type of bloom can be found sprouting behind shoulders, on ankles, wrists, hips and necks of women. Flowers represent life and beauty and are a great way to be a little daring without walking too far over the line.

Butterflies/Insects

Insects, especially butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies and bumble bees, are a very popular tattoo motif among women. Insect tattoos are appealing, because they are colorful, beautiful and can be small.

Fairies/Mythological

Almost every little girl is enchanted with tales of magic, and many grow up wanting to keep that magic alive. Fairies, unicorns and phoenixes are very popular tattoo designs for women, allowing them to add a little magic to every day.

Zodiac

Zodiac signs can also be found on many female bodies. They can be small or large; tucked out of the way on a wrist or ankle or given plenty of room on an arm or across the back.

Tribal/Design

Though men tend to prefer tribal tattoos, women also enjoy beautiful and sensual designs. Many women will get a design or tribal-oriented tattoo on their lower back (known to some as a “tramp stamp”), which can add a tantalizing hint of their tempestuous nature.

How Common Are Tattoos?

Thirty years ago, getting a tattoo was a sign of rebellion. “Normal people” just didn’t get tattoos.Common Tattoos Removed

Things have changed in a big way. Sit down at the mall for an hour of people watching on a warm day, and you’ll see tattoos on arms, ankles, shoulder blades, wrists and necks. Tattoos still have a whiff of rebellion, but, for the most part, they’ve become decidedly mainstream.

According to the Pew Research Center, 14% of all Americans have at least one tattoo. These numbers rise drastically when you start looking at specific age categories. For example, 36% of adults 18 – 25 have a tattoo, while that percentage jumps to roughly 40% of all adults ages 26 – 40.

Without the large stigma that tattoos used to hold, men and women feel more comfortable decorating their bodies with a little ink. If you have a tattoo or are considering a tattoo, you will be far from alone. And just remember, if you ever get tired of your tattoo, laser tattoo removal is always an option!

Most Painful Places To Get A Tattoo

In case you weren’t aware, getting a tattoo usually hurts. Sometimes the pain is bearable, and other times you’ll be gripping square-laser-tattoo-removal-tarpon-springsthe arms of the chair (or your best friend’s hand) like your life depended on it. Getting a tattoo involves having the tattoo artist must inject ink deep into the skin using a needle that punctures the skin over and over again.

The amount of pain you feel when getting a tattoo will depend in great part on your personal pain tolerance and what part of your body will be receiving the ink.  Areas with fewer nerves and a layer of fat will hurt less than areas where the skin is thin or there are a lot of nerves present.

Some of the most tattoo-sensitive areas of the body (so we’ve been told) are the feet, ankles, kneecaps, behind the ear, lips, eyelids, genitalia, ribcage, breasts and neck.

Not surprisingly, many people still want ink in these areas and are willing to endure high levels of pain to get their butterfly, tribal design or Superman logo. Amazing what we’ll put ourselves through for vanity!

Removing a tattoo can also be painful, though most clients agree it is much less painful than getting the original tattoo. Many customers compare the feeling of tattoo laser removal to getting snapped with a rubber band.

Lose That Tramp Stamp

Terrible tramp stamp

Ah the tramp stamp. These affectionately named lower back tattoos became popular with women in the early 2000’s, often accentuated with crop tops and low rise jeans. While this style of tattoo may have been popular 20 years ago, now its a painful reminder that the tramp stamp may have been styling when you were a 19 year old co-ed, but not so much anymore. Here’s some fun facts about tramp stamps.

  • The most common tramp stamp tattoos are tribal designs, stars, flowers, wings, dragons, and text tattoos
  • Other charming names for the tramp stamp include California license plate, slug tag, and bulls eye
  • While the majority of tramp stamp owners are women, there’s quite a few male celebrities that have gotten in on the fun including David Beckham, Antonio Sabato Jr (bonus, its the batman symbol), Brad Pitt, and Jake Gyllenhaall

Fortunately for Antonio Sabato Jr. and the rest of us tattoo removal technology has come a long way. Embarrassing tattoos now no longer need to be permanent reminders of trends long gone.

Does Skin Color Affect Laser Tattoo Removal Success?

vday[1]The success of laser tattoo removal depends on a variety of factors. For example, tattoos using darker inks will respond much better to tattoo laser removal than tattoos that use yellows, oranges and reds. The depth of the ink and age of the tattoo also play a role in the overall outcome of the laser tattoo removal procedure.

Unfortunately, the laser does not work equally on all skin types. The laser works best on light-colored skin and dark tattoos. Those with dark skin (African Americans, Hispanics and deeply-tanned Caucasians) may require additional laser treatments and may never achieve complete removal of the tattoo.

The reason behind this difference is that the laser needs to move through the skin in order to hit the ink of the tattoo and break it apart. The laser cannot travel as smoothly through dark skin due to increased levels of melanin

This is obviously frustrating for our dark-skinned patients, but at North Houston Laser Tattoo Removal, we try to be honest with each patient about how many laser treatments they will need and what results they can expect. If you are dark-skinned and have an old tattoo with black ink you may still get good results. A lot will depend on how dark your skin is, what your tattoo looks like and the age of the tattoo.

Ready To Lose The Faded Tattoo

Thirty years ago you were young, wild and free. You went to your local tattoo parlor and got your first tattoo. It wasGet Rid of Faded Tattoo exciting and maybe a little scandalous. Now, however, that crisp black design has devolved into a blurry, bluish blob. Some of your friends can’t even tell what your tattoo is supposed to be.

They say that tattoos are permanent, but the truth is that tattoo ink fades and breaks down over time just like almost everything else. In addition, as your body changes, so does your tattoo. If you have gained a lot of weight since you got the tattoo or if your skin is now more loose, your tattoo will warp with the changes of your skin.

Many older adults become unhappy with their faded, stretched tattoos. One option is to have the tattoo re-inked if you still want the tattoo on your body. The other option is tattoo laser removal to get the blurry blob of color off.

Fortunately, those with older tattoos usually get really good results with tattoo laser removal. If you’re interested in learning more about how we can remove your old and faded tattoo, give us a call at (281) 440-4663 to schedule a free laser tattoo removal consultation.

Older Tattoos Remove More Easily

It would be great if every single tattoo responded equally to our tattoo laser removal treatments, but actually the Remove old tattoosopposite is true. The success of a laser tattoo removal treatment depends on a lot of different factors, and results vary greatly from person to person.

If your tattoo is a few decades old, then you are in luck. Older tattoos tend to respond much better to tattoo laser removal treatment then newer tattoos. This is because older tattoos are closer to the surface of the skin than new tattoos, and the ink will naturally begin to break apart and fade with time.

When a professional tattoo artist inks a tattoo, he or she injects the ink deeply under the skin. A person sheds millions of skin cells every day, so year after year that tattoo slowly comes closer and closer to the surface of the skin. The ink will also naturally begin to break down over time. This is why old tattoos often look blurred and faded.

Our laser works by moving through the skin and breaking down the tattoo ink. If the tattoo is already close to the surface of the skin, then the laser can get to the ink much more easily. Additionally, since the ink of an old tattoo is already breaking apart, the laser just speeds up the process.

If you’re looking to get rid of an old, faded tattoo, then your chances of getting a favorable result through laser tattoo removal are very good. Call us at (281) 440 – 4663 to schedule a consultation.
